Whether you visit a local library or museum, attend a cultural or athletic event like the Olds Fair, or participate in a conservation project, lottery fund dollars are often at work behind the scenes.

And they're off! The starting gate at the Olds racetrack.

Racetrack and Infield

Olds boasts one of the finest racetracks in the province.Olds boasts one of the finest racetracks in the province. The sheet metal fence around the half mile track was widened to 50 feet in 1995, and the outer fence was replaced in the spring of 1996 with a white plastic rail, making it very eye-catching, clean-looking, and highlights the wagons as they race around the track. A special sand mixture was placed in the infield to improve footing, and rodeo cowboys have described it as one of the best infields for competitions. Heavy horse tie rails are located at the south end of the infield, and have proven to be useful not only at Fair-time, but whenever livestock needs to be tied up before entering the ring.

This area of the fairgrounds has been used as RV parking for the Good Samaritans Convention and the 1999 Alberta Seniors Games. The Eckville Pony Chuckwagon Association have also held pre-season races as fundraisers for the Horizon School in Olds. The big chuckwagons often use our racetrack for exercising and training their rigs, as well as mock race practices.

B Track in OAS Future

Olds is looking forward to horse races in the future, with stabling available for Balzac overflow if necessary. In August 2008, Standardbred Canada granted accreditation to the Olds oval to host officially recognized, recorded and timed races (Read article here). The accreditation is subject to Olds Agricultural Society's compliance with Horse Racing Alberta's rules of racing. According to determinations by D. Clayton J. Bruce Alberta and Canada Land Surveyor, the Olds oval is 329.4 feet short of an official half-mile racetrack. In adapting to the track configuration, the course has been divided into eighths such that the starting post and finishing post are at different positions on the track. Alberta Standardbred Horse Association racing manager, Fred Gillis, does not have any worries about the length as races will start before the finish line to accommodate the shortness of the track. Gillis and other top track people have surveyed the track and are really pleased with it, commenting on its great shape, good banking, and sand/clay mix.
