Olds Agricultural Society is very proud to host the largest summer livestock show in Alberta at the Olds Fair & Rodeo each year. Beef cattle, dairy cattle, heavy horses (hitch and halter), and purebred sheep shows compete for prizes and showcase some of the best seedstock in the province. For information on the 2008 livestock shows, please contact Donna Smith at 403-556-2290.
2009 Prize Lists & Entry Forms
There are usually full breed shows in Angus, Charolais, Gelbvieh, Hereford, Pinzgauer, Salers, Shorthorn, and Simmental, as well as a Mixed Breeds Class. Alberta Murray Grey breeders will also be showing this year in Olds. This show has been designated the Alberta Charolais Summer Designated Show. Each year the Grand or Supreme Champions from 13 top North American livestock shows, including the Olds Fair, compete head to head to determine the RBC Beef Supreme Champion at the Canadian Western Agribition in Regina, Saskatchewan. There are two Dairy Shows in Olds, the Senior Open and Junior Dairy. There are also Milking Classes. Two breeds of dairy cattle can be seen in Olds: Holstein and Jersey. The Olds Fair & Rodeo Dairy Show has been designated All Western Competition by Cowsmopolitan, the Alberta Branch of Holstein Canada, and the Alberta Jersey Breeders. OAS is looking forward to hosting the 31st Anniversary of the All Canadian Dairy Show in 2008. The Purebred Sheep Show in Olds is one of the largest summer sheep shows in Alberta. In addition to the Market Lamb Competition, Sheep Shows often include breeds such as the South African Merinas, Dorper, Dorsets, Columbias, Hampshire, Katahdin, N.C. Cheviot, Rambouillet, and Suffolk, as well as a Mixed Breed Show. A Goat Show was introduced in 2006 and is a hit with fair-goers of all ages! Displayed in the Caluori Pavilion during the Fair, you'll see some of the best looking goats around at the West National Goat Show!
There are two heavy horse shows featured in Olds, Halter Shows and Hitch Shows. This show has been designated the Alberta Percheron Club Provincial Show. There are four main draft horse breeds with full shows in Olds. These are the Belgians, Clydesdales, Percherons, and Shires. The Driving Competitions are real crowd pleasers. The uniformity of the animals and the shining equipment only add to the glamour and excitement. The pinnacle of any Heavy Horse Show is the skilled and magnificent hitch classes; Unicorn and 4- and 6-Horse Hitch classes take place during the chariot and chuckwagon intermissions. The Draft Horse Hitch classes are extremely popular with fair-goers, perhaps taking us back to a simpler time, when man and beast worked together to carve out the land. Last but by no means least, is the Supreme Show Parade of Champions, an inter-species parade of some of the best seedstock in western Canada. The Olds Fair & Rodeo is pleased to include the very high profile Supreme Champion Livestock Show on Sunday afternoon. This is the only Supreme Show in Canada that is displayed in an Inter-species manner, and a fabulous opportunity to witness superior livestock genetics from local breeders as well as out of province exhibitors.
