Olds Agricultural Society In the News Fair a smashing success say organizers
August 14, 2007
Paul Frey, Olds Albertan

Despite a slow start due to Friday’s rain, the Olds Fair and Rodeo was a success, with more crowds than ever.

Although Michael Latimer, president of the Olds Agricultural Society, said exact figures weren’t known, attendance on Saturday set a record.

"Saturday we set attendance records at the gates," he said, adding that Saturday’s dance was also one of the best attended.

Although Sunday’s events weren’t quite as well attended as Saturday’s, those that did attend saw an excellent show.

The fair brought in the most money ever in its 113-year history.

"Overall, we haven’t went over the final numbers ... but ... we’re quite happy with ... what happened at our fair. We’d always like more people to show up ... but you can’t get too greedy."

Latimer said on balance, feedback directors have heard so far was positive.

In the next couple of weeks, OAS directors will gather all the final numbers and plan for next year. One change that will be made for next year is the moving of some events to the south side of 54th Street with the erection of the domed tents for next year. The tentative plan is to move all the livestock events from the infield to the tents. Latimer said he hopes the tents will be fully operational by the end of summer or early fall.

"It’ll be different for next year," he said, noting that the new set-up should improve safety for the crowds. "When the races are on, it’s hard for people to get across the track into the infield."
